I joined the production team of Goodman Theatre’s A Christmas Carol in 2006 under the direction of William Brown. I wrote a waltz for the production that became the basis for a song that is performed in the show to this day. You can see a video of the song on my video page.
When Henry Wishcamper took over as director in 2013, he had a new concept for the Fezziwig party scene that required me to write a new waltz. Because of my attachment to the first waltz, I wasn’t sure I could do it but I took a stab at it. The result has become one of my favorite things I’ve written. Because it has been in the show since 2013 and I’ve now heard it performed so many times by different combinations of musicians, it no longer feels like something I wrote.
This version is from the album “Any Tune for A Tuppence” by Smoking Bishop, the band name for the quartet that debuted this waltz. It is a collection of Christmas music that also includes the first waltz I wrote for the show, as well as a jig from the same scene. You can hear and purchase the album using one of the links below.
